MATH                 FRACTIONS

Fractions  is a way of  expressing a relationship between two numbers.

To simplify a fraction you can divide.

There are 24 members in the Math Club, and 6 of the members have their own calculators. What fraction of the member have their own calculators?

There are 6/24 of the members that have their own calculators. To simplify the answer to this problem, find the GFC(Greatest Common Factor) of the numerator(6) and denominator(24), and then divide by it.

6  divide   6            1
-                          =     -
24 divide  6            4

To change a mixed number to a fraction is

(write this fraction on a piece of paper)

4   1/2              you leave the 2 the same

and multiply by 4           2x4=8   the you add the 8 by the 1   8+1-9    so the fraction is   9 as the denominator                                        __  as to seperate the 9                                                           2 as the denominator

The top part of a fraction is called the numerator. The bottom part of a fraction is called the denominator  .

 1/3  is equivalent to 5/15

To find equivalent fractions, multiply the numerator and denominator of a fraction by the same number.

Factors are the number that can be multiplied to give a certain product, or answer. The factors of 8 are the whole numbers that can be multiplied to give 8 as their product.

1x8=8     2x4=8

The factors of 6 are
1,2,3 and,6.

To add a fraction is like this

(use a piece of paper)               4                           3

                                                           __        +              __

                                                             9                          9
